HUMMER . How to Replace the Ignition Coil in a 1997 AuroraOldsmobile launched the Aurora in 1995. The 1997 Oldsmobile Aurora was equipped with a transverse (sideways) mounted, 4.0-liter V-8 engine capable of producing up to 250-horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque. The 1997 Aurora exceeded federal structural integrity regulations by a factor of two, actually breaking the standard testing machine during General Motors crush testing. The 1997 Aurora V-8 has a set of 4 ignition coils on the top rear of the engine. The coils control two spark plugs per coil, on an alternating current. Replacing one ignition coil should take no longer than 1/2-hour, even if you have never done this work before. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket set, with 3-inch extension Masking tape (1/2-inch or 1-inch width) Magic marker or permanent marker Step by Step : 1 Open the hood of the Aurora. Visually inspect and locate the coil packs on the top rear of the engine. The coil packs are out in the open on top of the engine, and can easily be identified by the spark plug wires protruding from the back of them. 2 Locate the ignition coil that you are going to remove, and mark the two spark plug wires with masking tape and a magic or permanent marker. Wrap a piece of tape around each wire and mark on "R" and the other "L," to notate which one is on the left and which one is on the right. Remove the two wires mounted to the ignition coil or coil pack. 3 Remove the single mounting bolt at the top of the ignition coil, using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket. Turn the bolt counterclockwise until you can remove it from the engine by hand. Pull the ignition coil straight upward and completely remove the old ignition coil from the engine. 4 Install the new ignition coil straight down into the coil pack rail. Insert the ignition coil mounting bolt and tighten the bolt with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket. The mounting bolt does not need to be torqued, so turn the ratchet until the bolt is snug then 1/4-turn farther and stop. This tightening method is called "snug-and-a-quarter," and is a great way to tighten a bolt or nut without damaging fragile parts. 5 Install the two wires onto the rear of the new ignition coil, making sure you put them in the same position that they were in before. The "L" marked wire goes on the left, and the "R" marked wire goes on the right. Switching these two wires can mess up the timing of the Aurora engine. Start the Aurora engine to test the new ignition coil. Tips & Warnings You can repeat this project to replace all four ignition coils on the 1997 Aurora V-8 if necessary. Having all new ignition coils is a great way to ensure regularity and balance in your Aurora's ignition system. Do not touch the ignition key or attempt to start the engine while the spark wires are not on the ignition coil. Exposed coil towers can emit uncontrolled electrical arcs. These arcs can damage the engine or shock a person with over 90 amps of concentrated electricity in each arc.
HUMMER . How to Test the Ignition Coil on a 1996 Acura TL 2.5L1996 was the first year that Honda Motor Corporation introduced the Acura TL. The 1996 Acura appeared in the 2.5L and 3.2L sub-models. Both sub-models' names come from the size of the engine. The 1999 TL 2.5L had a 2.5-liter in-line 4-cylinder engine, capable of producing up to 176-hp and 170 foot-pounds of torque. The 1999 TL 2.5L has a coil pack attached to the ignition, which the ignition control module regulates. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Ohmmeter Step by Step : 1 Open the hood of the TL, and position yourself near the passenger side fender. Locate and inspect the ignition coil on the passenger side firewall of the TL. Remove the four-prong connector on the coil pack that connects the coil pack to the engine, by hand. 2 Remove the electrical power connector from the other end of the coil pack, exposing both the positive and negative leads on the coil pack. Remove this connector by hand by simply pulling the connector free of the ignition coil. 3 Attach the red lead from an ohmmeter to the positive electrical prong on the coil pack, or the prong marked with a +. Attach the black lead from the ohmmeter to the negative prong on the coil pack, or the prong marked with a -. Read the gauge or digital meter on the ohmmeter to determine the amount of resistance the coil pack is creating. The numbers on the gauge or meter should be between 0.36 and 0.44 ohms. If the number is not within this range, the coil pack is bad. 4 Reinstall the electrical connector and engine connector in the same manner you took them off, if the coil pack is working properly. Tips & Warnings Coil packs are relatively easy to replace. Simply unplug the coil pack and remove the mounting hardware. Remove the old coil pack and install the mounting hardware. Plug the new coil pack in and you are done. First Things First If you have reason to believe that your vehicle is having a problem, try to get to the right-hand shoulder of the road, especially if you're on a highway. Very often, if a vehicle is going to do its swan song while in motion, it will give you a couple of hints first. If you can recognize those hints as signs of impending disaster, you'll be able to get out of traffic before the car dies completely. All the following symptoms are good reasons to head for the side of the road immediately, park, and check things out: Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies. 434 HUMMER . Doing so pays off when you're ready to get back onto the road — because you can spot oncoming traffic before it's on your tail. If the car dies right on the highway and you can't get off the road, don't get out of the car! I know that sitting in a dead car with traffic piling up behind you is unnerving, but attempting to cross a high-speed freeway on foot is suicide. Most heavily traveled highways are also heavily patrolled, and a nice highway patrol officer will be along before you know it. Once the officer is on the scene, it's a simple matter of stopping traffic long enough to push your vehicle to the right-hand shoulder. When you reach the side of the road, take these additional safety precautions: Roll down the window on the driver's side, hang out a white cloth or piece of paper, and roll the window back up to secure it in place. The cloth or paper also alerts drivers to proceed around you. If you can easily reach the passenger-side window without getting out of the car, do the same on that side. Try not to obstruct your ability to see out the windows. If you know that you're going to need roadside assistance, use your cell phone to call your auto club or the highway patrol. If you have no cell phone — and you can see an emergency call box nearby — use the call box to call for help. If no call box is handy, you're probably better off hanging a white cloth or piece of paper out the window and waiting for the highway patrol to spot you. In these days of daytime carjackings, walking along the highway alone can be dangerous. To avoid being hit by a passing vehicle, don't work on your car from the left (driver's) side, unless you can do so while standing well away from the nearest traffic lane. If you can, move the car farther off the road, and try to reach into the trouble area from the front or right side, keeping away from traffic. That goes for changing left-side tires, too. .Chapter 21: What to Do If Your Car Drops Dead or Won't Start A 2 C If it's daylight, put on your emergency blinkers or your left-turn signal to alert oncoming traffic to the fact that your car isn't moving. This is not a good idea at night because motorists coming up behind you may think that your vehicle is still rolling along the highway and run right into the rear end of your car. (Drunk drivers are especially prone to this sometimes fatal error.) If it's nighttime, place warning lights or reflective markers about 6 feet behind the vehicle to alert traffic. If you have neither of these, either turn on the interior lights manually or leave the right-hand car door open so that the interior lights stay on. HUMMER . Advantages of cars?
